Arte Amazonia is working with Alan Highton to help support
his dedication to the people of Catatumbo on the Maracaibo Lake located in the western region of Venezuela. This lake is the largest in the world with an outlet to the ocean. The fresh warm waters of this lake create a unique eco-system which is the home to dolphins, exotic birds and other tropical fish and animals. It is also home to the natural meteorological phenomenon of fantastic lightning occuring almost 360 days out of the year, or, up to 2,000,000 flashes of lightning a year!
The people native to this land have villages built on water with houses on stilts. Alan is working hard for the people who live there to provide them with clean water and regular testing of it. He also is engaged in providing support to the people by encouraging them to claim their rights as a community and request support for their infrastructure. Alan is deeply concerned with helping maintain this delicate eco-system and is doing this through education and awareness of this region.
