SPIRIT OF THE MASK

This internationally award-winning film explores the spiritual and psycological nature of Northwest Coast Native Masks. Featuring dramatic, rarely-seen ceremonies as well as interviews with native spiritual leaders, the film traces the meaning of native art and the effects of government policies which saw the banning of mask ceremonies. The video raises issues about the therapeutic value of native ceremonies and the housing of cultural objects in museums.
